The Best Salt Dough Recipe for Christmas Ornaments

Most of us, at some point, have made something using salt dough, even if it was back in grade school. Between then and now there have been huge advancements in salt dough chemistry. OK, I’m kidding, but over time, crafty people have really perfected the art of making this fun dough. I have made and used this recipe and I can proudly share that it’s the best salt dough recipe for Christmas ornaments. This dough rolls out beautifully and it worked perfectly for my vintage inspired wooden cookie mold. It took me about four cookie mold ornaments until I got a hang of how much dough to press into the mold and how much extra flour to add to the dough ball to prevent sticking. My favorite part about this particular recipe is that it has cinnamon and smells wonderful, but not too strong.

This recipe originated from Miss Mustard Seed, and then I found it on DIY Beautify. I followed the DIY Beautify recipe exactly, but I used the full cup of water. The addition of cinnamon in this salt dough recipe just makes it so pretty and I love the vintage look. Several weeks later, the ornaments still have a soft cinnamon smell. The only difficulty I had was waiting for them to fully dry. I’m not the most patient and once they were done, I really wanted to hang them and add them to a few gifts. I did bake my batch at 200 degrees for about 30 minutes, and then I let them air dry the rest of the time. I noticed a few little cracks, but nothing that ruined the design or structure of the ornament.

The Best Salt Dough Recipe for Christmas Ornaments – Recipe

This recipe is directly from Cindy at DIY Beautify, but I used the entire cup of room temperature water. Make sure the water is at room temp, it makes a difference when mixing.

  • 1-1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup table salt
  • 1/2 cup ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup room temp water

Using this wooden cookie mold was so much fun and I cannot wait to use it to make real cookies. Sugar cookies without frosting are my favorite so I’ll start there and see how it goes. The cookie mold is also very pretty by itself, I may need to display it in some way this spring or summer. Next time I use this salt dough recipe, I will try it without the cinnamon and use more flour instead. I’d like to see how the color and consistency works. Don’t worry, I will share my findings at that time. Now that my salt dough ornaments were a success, it’s time to get baking some edible cookies instead of these ‘fake cookies’ like my eight-year-old grumpily pointed out.
