Best Boho Farmhouse Bedroom Decor

Best Boho Farmhouse Bedroom Decor

My teenage daughter, Sawyer, requested a boho farmhouse bedroom design when we were building our home. Knowing her as I do, and the subtleties of the boho farmhouse style made her bedroom design one of my favorites, so far. Sawyer’s boho farmhouse bedroom is my most pinned photo on Pinterest, and I get a ton of questions about her bedroom. Where did I get the pillows, the rug, the throw blanket, and the headboard are the most frequently asked questions and I’m dedicating this post to answer all those fine questions. Since some of the items are discontinued or were never online, I have found some of the best boho farmhouse bedroom decor to inspire your own design!

Best Boho Farmhouse Bedroom Decor – Design first

The first step in any good design, is to gather all your inspiration, make notes, pick out colors, and give consideration to all the elements before making a single purchase. Sometimes it doesn’t happen this way because a single purchase will inspire the entire room design. However, in general, come up with a good plan before you start shopping. Mixing boho and farmhouse elements is easy, but the best way to make it look good is to focus on the colors you incorporate. If you go for a bright boho look, it will be more difficult to fit in the farmhouse vibe. You can stick with blacks, whites, and neutrals for your color palette, but you better bring on the plants to give it that boho feel. However you design it, make a plan and have a whole vision before working out each detail.

For Sawyer’s boho farmhouse bedroom, I used muted and rich tones in the same colors. For instance, I used a soft pale salmon pillow which played well off the dark rust in the rug. And I selected the Magnolia paint color, Clean Lines, for the shiplap because when everything is out of the room, this neutral green looked amazing with the carpet, Alabaster white paint, and the light grey black-out curtains. The soft green grey was a good neutral to add some color but not overpower things. We have been in discussion to change the shiplap color, so be sure to subscribe and stay tuned for updates on that. The main colors (washed out or rich) are salmon, teal, navy, and mustard.

The throw pillows were discovered and purchased over the course of several months, over a year ago, from Home Goods and Target. So, unfortunately, most of them aren’t available to directly link to. However, I have found several beautiful and affordable pillows that would also look amazing in Sawyer’s bedroom design, and I believe are some of the best boho farmhouse bedroom decor accessories out there.

Best Boho Farmhouse Bedroom Decor – Rugs

I must confess, I’m not usually a fan of shag rugs or carpets, but the rug in Sawyer’s boho farmhouse bedroom design is one of the prettiest rugs I’ve owned. The colors and pattern are brilliant, and we haven’t outgrown them yet. The shag length isn’t too long, and it provides a nice texture in the room which is great for the boho look. As of now, you can still find this rug at Target and I’ve been tempted to get the largest size, but my home isn’t boho so I must resist. I have also included some additional rugs that I think would have also looked lovely in this boho farmhouse bedroom design.

Best Boho Farmhouse Bedroom Decor – Throw blanket

When I placed the berry rust fleece blanket on the corner of Sawyer’s bed for the photo, I never imagined how many questions I’d get about it. Target had an endcap with all these beautiful jewel-toned fleece blankets, and I asked Sawyer which colors were her favorite. Berry was her first pick, but she pointed out several others too. And she has good taste, most of the colors would have been beautiful in her bedroom design, but that berry tone was quite special, and the fleece is perfect for snuggling. Here is the ever-requested throw blanket from the best boho farmhouse bedroom decor line-up (the other colors are also gorgeous):

Best Boho Farmhouse Bedroom Decor – Cane Headboard

This cane headboard is officially, the first piece of furniture I built. I constructed it on the living room floor of the apartment we lived in during the build of our home. The design is simple, just pocket holes, and the cane was an awesome find as I soon realized it’s hard to get cane at a descent price. You can watch the short video below to see how I constructed and mounted this headboard (no frame, yet). The video was done in the apartment (it was so dark and confining to me).

There is something so peaceful and relaxing about this space – this is the best part of the bohemian style. The casual cozy vibe of boho mixed with the homey farmhouse feel is such a great combination, especially for my laidback teen girl. We have been in discussions to refresh her space just a bit, but I promise that the overall vibe won’t change at all – still relaxing, beautiful, and comfy. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave me a comment below or over on Instagram~ Thanks for checking out this post, I hope you’re inspired!

Faux Succulent Wall Art

Gorgeous boho canvas art and DIY frame

Sometimes wall art decisions come easy and other times it can be more challenging. I love vintage art and photography, but it’s difficult to find paintings that I love and can afford. And while I’m not an artist by any stretch of the imagination, I have found abstract lines to be forgiving and doable. To solve my wall art issues, I have created a gorgeous boho canvas art and DIY frame to grace the walls of my daughter’s bedroom.

The abstract canvas painting is completely inspired by Andrea of Harlow and Thistle. She is a talented designer with an amazing blog full of inspiration. Andrea primed over a faded store-bought canvas and used leftover wall paint from her home. I love it when DIY projects are inexpensive and re-purposes items you already have around the house.

Painting your own canvas can be quite relaxing and even fun. Before you begin painting, be sure to attach hanging hardware to the backside of your canvas if it needs it, and prime the canvas before adding your design. After painting each color block on my canvas, I allowed each color to dry. With each section dry, it makes it easier to continue without disturbing other blocks of color. Andrea used painters’ tape to create the abstract lines, but you can also paint them free-hand like I did. I wasn’t attempting perfection and my foam brush did pretty darn well keeping a smooth line.

You can find beautiful color combinations on Pinterest to create your own gorgeous boho canvas art and DIY frame. Out of the acrylic craft paints on the shelf, I couldn’t find a blush color that I liked so I added some of the beige sand color to the light pink I found and mixed up the exact shade I was looking for. Don’t be afraid to mix up your own colors to work with your style and preferences.

Now that your canvas art is complete and ready to be hung on the wall and enjoyed, there is one final step that will make a huge difference for displaying your art. You can use scrap wood, leftover trim pieces, or make a quick trip down to Home Depot to get some wood slats for your DIY frame. I love the natural color of this wood, but you can stain it or paint it to coordinate with your style. This DIY frame will give your canvas art some dimension and style. The type of wood you choose will help determine the look you want for the artwork. Narrow and natural wood will give it a sleek and modern look, while thicker wood can create a casual farmhouse style.

I created a short one-minute video to show you just how easy it is to create your own frame with common tools. Here are the steps:

  1. Select your wood piece, make sure you have enough to cover the perimeter of your canvas art. I painted a 16” x 20” canvas, so I needed to have 72 inches of wood to make my frame.
  2. Set the left-side of the canvas on the piece of wood and mark the board for the first cut.
  3. Use a hand saw with a miter box to guide your cut.
  4. Once cut, sand the rough edges using a fine grit sanding sponge.
  5. Line up the wood onto the left-side of the canvas, and use a brad nail gun or staple gun to attach the wood to the canvas. I used 5/8 inch brad nails because my wood is thin.
  6. Mark and cut the right-side wood slat, and attach it to the right-side of your canvas.
  7. Once the left and right sides are covered with wood, mark, cut, and attach the top and bottom wood slats.

This gorgeous boho canvas art and DIY frame was so much fun, and couldn’t have been easier to create. After taking on the challenge to create a piece of artwork that coordinates with my daughter’s room style, I’m now thinking about creating another piece of art on a larger scale for the bonus/guest room upstairs. DIY Stenciled Dressers

The final touch for the bohemian master bedroom redesign was a makeover for the dressers. These mission style dressers are in perfect condition and meet the client’s needs. However, the darker stain wasn’t ideal for the light and airy vibe in their new boho room.

There are some ways to makeover wood furniture; you can paint, cover with wallpaper, and stencil, to name a few. After weighing out the options, we went with stenciling a tribal batik pattern only on the drawers of each dresser.

The pattern is perfect for this boho room, and the creamy white colored design brightens the dark wood just enough. We could have also painted the top piece the creamy white or even the entire frame, but we were conservative and subtle with our makeover approach.

Stenciling takes time and patience. It’s not a great project if you’re looking for immediate satisfaction, but the results can be stunning. Here are some times from my experience stenciling these dressers:

  • Number the drawers. I used a piece of painter’s tape inside the drawer to write the number, then I drew a sketch of the dresser and indicated each drawer’s number on the sketch. This will help you to easily put the drawers back in order – especially with the continual pattern we used.
  • Keep the hardware in order. After removing each drawer handle, I lined them up in the same order so that they could be placed back onto the same drawer.
  • Use painters tape to attach your stencil. The painters tape holds well and removes easily.
  • Paint a few drawers at a time. I used some books underneath the drawers to make them lay flat and sturdy. I lined up as many drawers that fit inside the stencil. This saves time and keeps the pattern continual.
  • Use as little as paint as possible. If the paint is too thick, it will run behind the stencil and could ruin your design. I used a towel to lift extra paint, but even then I sometimes experienced extra paint.
  • Use a sponge roller for large stencils. The roller will help keep the paint evenly distributed and covers a larger portion than a small dabbing sponge.
  • Make sure to let the paint dry before removing the stencil – or be very careful.
  • Use a craft acrylic paint. There are so many colors these days to choose from, it dries quickly, and it’s inexpensive.
  • When you seal the stenciled design, either spray or apply with one swipe of a brush. The seal will smear or even remove your design. If you don’t seal the design, it can get scratched off or worn off. Save all your hard work and just seal it with a water-based polyurethane. If you don’t have a light touch for painting, get a spray can of it instead.
  • Be sure to follow the instructions on the can of polyurethane – you want the coats to fully dry and cure before using and installing the hardware.
