This January we celebrated our first year in our home. One of the things that we wanted last year but didn’t get because they sold out like hotcakes was a patio set for the back patio. We love our view out back and the spring, fall, and early winter months are wonderful to be outdoors here in NW Arkansas. This spring we’ll be ready, and I’m so excited to share with you our stylish and affordable patio decor! Picking out a patio set is hard work y’all. We didn’t want to spend a lot, but I wanted it to look nice, and it needed to be comfy. The reality is that we’re not the type of people to sit in a space for a long period of time, so the furniture didn’t have to be the most comfortable stuff we could find. Even though it’s not practical, I wanted white cushions, but our set didn’t have that option, but light grey is close enough and probably a better option with kids. We found an affordable set and then I had a blast styling and decorating the back patio. Now we just need a fence so that everyone can’t watch us enjoy it~

The patio furniture set up was easy, just a few screws for the table. The chairs swivel so they can also enjoy the view if they’re not needed in a conversation.

When it came down to it, there was actually another set that caught our eye. It had four swivel chairs and a firepit. The firepit was nice and the cover allowed it to function as a table when not in use, but the set would have taken up a lot of space and it was only four chairs. The set we selected only gives us one more seat, but the couch also lets someone lay down and we can arrange it a few ways if we want. The patio set we selected came with covers and it’s heavy enough to withstand the strong winds we can get out here (tornado anyone?). We were fortunate to be able to sit on it at Sam’s Club and see the details in-person. We’re happy with it so far, and I would recommend it to others. We could have got our set with a firepit for $500 more but decided that for us it just wouldn’t get the use.

This is the set from Sam’s Club that we got on SALE! We love the swivel chairs.

The assembly was easy, and Sawyer and I carried the pieces from the garage to the back patio with no problem. Then we got an ice storm… so my dreams of styling the back patio were temporarily put on hold. As soon as it began to thaw, I dragged Sawyer to Walmart, and we picked out just a few things to spruce up the new space. I used a lot of items that I already had, and I’ve already thought of a few tweaks so that we can serve food out there. If you already have some outdoor decor and accessories, consider paint to refresh or sometimes just a good cleaning can breathe new life into outdoor decor.

These are not outdoor pillows, but until I find just a few that I love, I’ll bring these in and out.

Anyway, before I get carried away with more plans for the space, I want to share what I think is essential to have for a cozy patio space. After finding comfy and weather-safe furniture, find an outdoor rug to add a cozy and comfy feel to the space. Outdoor rugs can be hosed off and some don’t fade in the sun. I just think it’s an easy way to create a beautiful and cozy space that also feels good on bare feet. Plants are another way to add beauty and life to the space – and if you do planter gardening it should be easy to move in some of those plants to enjoy on the patio – and then back out into the sun afterwards.

Some accent furniture can also make the space feel homier and add a ton of functionality to the space. When we had to cut down a dead tree last year, we asked the guys to cut up the stump for us. Now I get to use those stumps as side tables for us to set down drinks, phones, etc. when we’re enjoying the outdoor space. Another accent piece is a potting bench, a tea/bar cart, or anything you have to place food and drinks on. If you have something cute to set up food and drinks it will make it easy to go out there to eat and enjoy your outdoor space.

Outdoor lighting is the final essential for your stylish and affordable patio decor. We will be getting an outdoor fan/light for the space because flowing air just makes those muggy nights more comfortable. I would also like to add some cafe lights or something to add a soft dreamy light in the evenings, but that may not happen this season – I just don’t have a plan yet. So, in the meantime, candles and lanterns will give us that little bit of accent lighting to warm up the space and create a cozy feeling.

The patio space is far from done and I’m excited to watch it change over time. I’d like to make or find a vintage sign for the brick wall, and maybe I’ll move my cafe table from the front porch to the back patio so that I can have some teatime this summer with my daughters. And I just love the weathered ladder I found at Hobby Lobby to hold some throw blankets – my girls love their blankets, and I am known to get chilly, so a blanket ladder is a great way to display the blankets for use and then to easily move inside when we’re done. Now is the time to be on the lookout for those things that will make your outdoor space cozier and more livable so that you’ll actually use the space when the weather allows.
