Easy Ways to Decorate for Spring

Once the springtime new growth and spots of sun show their face, I quickly transition our home to light and bright with spots of peach, blush, terracotta, and greens taking over. It doesn’t take any money to redecorate your home for spring vibes, but I’m not gonna lie – I love adding a few new items to rejuvenate our home. I want to encourage you to shop your home and move some things around, remove some heavier darker items, and with a little spring cleaning your home will sing with springtime in no time. I have a few easy ways to decorate for spring – they’re not original or new, but all together can create amazing spring vibes throughout your home.

Let’s start with textiles, do you swap out your pillow covers or pillows? I have seasonal pillows, and often change out the covers when IKEA creates new designs that I love. But I also reduce the number of pillows on our sofas to keep things light and airy. You can fill your sofa with lovely spring pillows, it’s just my preference to reduce the total number. I also like to add a light and airy throw blanket just to keep that casual and inviting feeling going, and some spring days require the air conditioner so a throw can come in handy too.

The easiest (and free) way to add spring vibes to your home is to clip some branches and fill vases and pottery you already have. I love adding long stems to our kitchen island and shorter ones to side tables and the mantel. I actually cut some white blossom stems – they were gorgeous – and they stunk so bad. The girls weren’t happy, I was getting a headache, and I had to use my diffuser to remove the smell. However, cherry blossoms and myrtle stems seam to be just fine. The cut branches don’t have to have blossoms, bits of fresh green will revive your look and bring the spring growth inside. Adding plants, real or faux, around your home in general is a great way to add spring vibes.

Another fun way to add spring to your décor is to upcycle pots and containers your already have. I know a few smart people who save crazy containers, just in case, and I think these are the perfect pieces to upcycle. You can age them with acrylic paint, do color blocking with spray paint, or decoupage.

I also remove all the candles around the house. This isn’t necessary, but if I’m not burning them, I like to store them. There is the exception though, I like to have a candle in the powder room because its smell fills the small space without being burned.

Some quick places to swap out décor and add touches of spring are in your entryway, on your coffee table, on the kitchen table, the kitchen island, and the bathroom. Removing décor or swapping it out can often refresh the feel of a room even if the items aren’t exactly springy. One way to easily showcase some décor and create a manageable vignette is to use a tray. Even the Dollar Store has trays and they can be painted to go with your style. Trays can be used to gather items to showcase, to organize items, to protect a surface, and to add an additional layer of interest.

Have you noticed that some plants lend themselves better to certain seasons than others? Consider the real and faux plants you have around the house and maybe shift some things around – plants sometimes flourish better in different spots anyway, so shifting around your plants and removing the non-seasonal ones can really make an impact. I also love adding reindeer moss to a plain glass vase – it adds green and texture and smells nice too. Sometimes I add a small plate or saucer under a pot just to add some height and give it more interest. You can accomplish the same feel by placing your planters on risers, books, trays, or wood slices – you can get creative with it.

If you are a vintage lover like me, consider vintage gardening items for inside your home. I have an old wooden tool box that looks beautiful with fresh greenery, but it can also double as a table centerpiece filled with mason jars to hold our silverware, a container for napkins, and our outdoor melanin plates and cups. The look is causal and carefree and feels like an indoor picnic. Vintage pieces can immediately be transformed by adding a plant or spring filler to it.

Lastly, the texture, warmth, and lightness provided by baskets not only give off spring vibes, but they work with so many décor styles and can be quite functional too. I’m sure you’ve seen basket plate wall galleries on Instagram – and I love these too but I’m talking about regular old baskets, decorative, storage, various sizes and colors. I especially love the lidded urn floor baskets I’ve seen at Home Goods for cheap when they’re over $100 elsewhere. Anyway, I love added baskets (rattan, wicker, seagrass, bamboo, etc.) to my shelves, my tables, counters, and floors. I think they can really make a bold statement when collected and displayed.

Once you do a little spring cleaning it’s easy to start decluttering and moving things around. I would encourage you to do just one thing to add spring vibes to your home. My favorite way is to clip a few stems from a bush or tree and add them to a vase you already have, any vase. Display your vase anywhere and enjoy a touch of outdoors inside your home. Little things can make a big impact and brighten your day. Let me know in the comments below your favorite way to add spring vibes to your home!
